Notre Dame Vice Chancellor to depart in late 2026

23 January 2026

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Notre Dame Australia, Professor Francis Campbell, has advised the University community of his intention to leave his role later in the year  to take up a new role in the Americas.

Professor Campbell, who joined Notre Dame from St Mary’s University in London in January 2020 shared the news with staff in a joint message issued with Chancellor Paul McClintock AO. Professor Campbell noted that with the first phase of Notre Dame’s current strategic plan concluding in 2026, the timing is right for new leadership to guide the University into its next chapter.

“The journey of this university has been a remarkable one over the past thirty-plus years, and its future will continue to be marked by commitment, dedication and grace. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the Notre Dame community for their tireless commitment to higher education. That commitment changes the lives of our students and it goes to the heart of what a Catholic university is, which commits to a wider formation and the pursuit of truth.”

Chancellor McClintock paid tribute to Professor Campbell’s significant and transformative leadership, noting his role in expanding the University’s disciplines and course offerings, establishing its research agenda and capability, increasing student enrolments to record levels, and broadening Notre Dame’s national and global impact. These achievements have contributed to strong financial performance and long‑term institutional stability.

“Francis has demonstrated exceptional vision and steadfast commitment to Catholic education,” the Chancellor said. “While we will formally celebrate his contribution later in the year, we are grateful that he will continue to lead the University through 2026.”

Professor Campbell advised the University Board last year of his intention to depart from the role and will stay on until the latter part of 2026, ensuring stability and continuity during the transition period as the University prepares for the next stage of its strategic journey.
