Reach Higher: a new pathway to Primary Teaching for rural and remote Australians

22 September 2025

The University of Notre Dame Australia is proud to announce the launch of its Reach Higher program, a transformative initiative designed to empower aspiring teachers from regional, rural, and remote communities to earn a Bachelor of Primary Education without needing to relocate.

Officially unveiled at the Broome Campus Open Day in September, the Reach Higher program will commence in Semester 1 2026, with enrolments now open through Notre Dame’s Broome Campus.

This nationally accredited four-year degree prepares students to teach primary-aged children in Catholic, independent and government schools across Australia. The program is offered online via the Broome Campus, allowing students to remain in their communities while accessing high-quality education.

Flexible Study, Local Impact

Reach Higher offers a flexible, community-based model that includes:

  • Pre-recorded lectures for self-paced learning
  • Live online tutorials led by expert educators
  • Local practicum placements (up to 30 weeks) for hands-on experience
  • Personalised tutor support throughout the degree

Students can study full-time or part-time, making it ideal for:

  • School leavers
  • Education support staff seeking career advancement
  • Mature age students looking to make a difference

The program also recognises Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), making it accessible to those with previous study or work experience.

Real-World Experience and Accreditation

Students will complete 30 weeks of professional experience placements, gaining valuable classroom exposure and building confidence. Graduates will be eligible for teacher registration in any Australian state or territory, thanks to accreditation by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.

Scholarships and Financial Support

Notre Dame is committed to reducing financial barriers for regional students. A wide range of scholarships are available, with more than 40 scholarships available for students studying through our Broome Campus.  Students who are employed in the sector as Teacher Assistants may also receive support from their employers.
