Renowned Vatican journalists to visit Australia for Notre Dame events

12 August 2026

The University of Notre Dame Australia's Global Centre for Catholic Leaders will welcome internationally acclaimed Vatican journalists and authors Gerard O'Connell and Elisabetta Piqué to Australia this month for a series of events exploring leadership, communication and the future of the Catholic Church.

The pair will visit Fremantle, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, sharing their insights into contemporary Vatican affairs, the election of Pope Leo XIV and the legacy of Pope Francis.

Their visit coincides with the release of their new book, The Election of Pope Leo XIV: The Last Surprise of Pope Francis, which offers an insider's account of the conclave that elected the new Pope and examines the challenges and opportunities facing the Church during a period of significant transition.

Notre Dame Global Centre for Catholic Leaders Director Laura Avery said the visit presented a rare opportunity for Australians to hear directly from two of the world's most respected commentators on Vatican affairs.

“Gerard and Elisabetta have spent decades reporting on some of the most significant moments in contemporary Church history,” Ms Avery said.

“Their experience, insights and personal connections provide a unique window into the life of the Church and the leadership challenges and opportunities emerging under Pope Leo XIV.

“We are delighted to welcome them to Australia and look forward to bringing together Catholic leaders, educators, clergy and members of the wider community for reflective conversations about faith, leadership and communication.”

During their tour, attendees can expect thoughtful reflections on the recent papal transition, the legacy of Pope Francis and the challenges and hopes facing the Church under Pope Leo XIV.
