  • Why study this degree?

    If you have been teaching for some time in the religious studies field and have the practical experience and a desire to share your love of spirituality with children, this Master’s degree is the perfect course for you. The Master of Education (Religious Studies) is designed to meet the needs of professional teachers like you who wish to undertake further career development.

    Our flexible study options will accommodate your existing teaching load. Tuition will be available face-to-face and externally, either full-time or part-time. Face-to-face sessions are scheduled during school holidays or Saturdays.

    The Master of Education (Religious Education) is a coursework degree that requires the completion of eight courses, including two compulsory courses, one elective and five specialisation courses. Topics include Critical and Creative Thinking in Religious Education, Theories and Models of Leadership for Catholic Schools, and Religious and Spiritual Development of Young People.

  • Entry requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Master of Education (Religious Education) applicants must also meet the following specific requirements:

    • Be eligible for teacher registration in Australia; and either
    • Successfully complete the University of Notre Dame Australia Graduate Certificate of Education (Religious Education) or equivalent; or
    • Have at least two years of full-time professional experience in either a primary or secondary school setting.
  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Master of Education (Religious Education) graduates will be able to:

    1. Critically apply and reflect on advanced knowledge of educational and theological theory and practices that includes the understanding of recent developments in religious education
    2. Demonstrate highly developed cognitive, technical and creative skills with initiative, a high level of personal autonomy and accountability to generate understanding of complex educational and theological issues in religious education
    3. Evaluate and apply knowledge of research principles and methods to religious education within Catholic school contexts
    4. Demonstrate highly developed communication and technical skills to implement, justify and interpret critical issues in religious education, pastoral care, spirituality and values education presented within Catholic educational contexts; and
    5. Plan, execute and reflect critically on a substantial research-based project and/or piece of scholarship on critical issues in religious education, pastoral care, spirituality, or values education within Catholic school settings.
  • Career opportunities

    With a Master of Education (Religious Studies), your career options include teaching religious studies in Australia as a Primary or Secondary School teacher in Catholic, Independent and Government schools, depending on your teaching qualification. Other career opportunities within the education system include Lead teacher, faculty or year group coordinator, principal, and assistant principal.  Other career options outside the education sector are child and youth worker, charity coordinator, or administrative coordinator.

  • Real-world experience

    You will learn from our academics, who are leaders in their field. There are no practicum requirements for this program.
