  • Why study this degree?

    Flexible, well-structured and contemporary in its focus, this Master of Religious Education program appeals to experienced teachers who wish to gain a solid theological and educational grounding to become religious educators and school leaders.

    The degree, which consists of eight courses, can be completed in one year of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study. Classes are available in a mix of modes: Intensive (during school holidays), Semi-intensive (four Saturdays over a semester) and online. The study can be done entirely in external/online mode if this is more suitable.

    The Master of Religious Education is designed to provide you with the maximum flexibility to choose subjects that interest you. In addition to the four core Religious Education and Theology courses, you are free to choose four electives from these disciplines.   • Entry requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Master of Religious Education applicants must also meet the following specific requirements:

    • Be eligible for teacher registration in Australia; and either
    • Successfully complete the University of Notre Dame Australia Graduate Certificate of Religious Education or equivalent; or
    • Have at least two years of full-time professional experience in either a primary or secondary school setting.
  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Master of Religious Education graduates will be able to:

    1. Critically apply and reflect on advanced knowledge of educational and theological theory and practices that includes the understanding of recent developments in religious education
    2. Demonstrate highly developed cognitive, technical and creative skills with initiative, a high level of personal autonomy and accountability to generate understanding of complex educational and theological issues in religious education
    3. Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to religious education within Catholic school contexts
    4. Demonstrate highly developed communication and technical skills to implement, justify and interpret critical educational and theological theory and issues in religious education, pastoral care, spirituality and values education presented within Catholic educational contexts; and
    5. Plan, execute and reflect critically on a substantial research-based project and/or piece of scholarship on critical issues in religious education, pastoral care, spirituality, or values education within Catholic school settings.

    With a Master of Religious Education, your career options include teaching religious studies in Australia as a Primary or Secondary School teacher in Catholic, Independent and Government schools, depending on your teaching qualification.

  • Real-world experience

    The FEE-HELP loan scheme assists eligible fee-paying students with the payment of all, or part, of their tuition fees, not including additional study costs such as accommodation or textbooks. Your FEE-HELP debt will be indexed each year in line with the Consumer Price Index.
