  • About this program

    This postgraduate program provides dynamic opportunities for engagement with organisations and individuals working to combat modern slavery and human trafficking. The flexibility in the program allows you to select the study mode - research or professional practice – that suits you best, and you can choose elective courses to focus on your particular areas of interest.

    The research mode provides you with the research design and methodology you need to undertake high-level research, culminating in a substantial research project focusing on end-user research.

    The professional practice mode provides you with specialist insights and expertise, designed to ensure ethical decision-making skills and encourage the development of future industry leaders. You will complete an applied professional project, co-designed with a partner organisation, and focus on applying professional skills to specific workplaces and anti-slavery and anti-trafficking groups.

  • Program summary

    Students in the Master of Arts (Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking) complete six required courses and then select the study mode that suits them best – either research or professional practice.

    Students may be eligible for recognition of prior learning from their studies or via their work and life experience. Ask about this when you apply.

    Applied Research Study Mode

    Students complete these six (6) required courses (250 credits):

    Students complete two (2) of the following courses (50/75 credits):

    • ARTS5XXX Policing Human Trafficking
    • BUSN5008 Modern Slavery and Global Politics
    • BUSN5750 Organisations: Power, Leadership and Transformation

    Students complete any of the following to make 400 units of credit (50/100 credits):

    • ARTS5000 Modern Slavery and Global Politics
    • ARTS5XXX Policing Human Trafficking
    • BUSN5750 Organisations: Power, Leadership and Transformation
    • ARTS6XXX Special Topics in Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking
    • ARTS6XXX Fieldwork in Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking
    • ARTS6XXX Case-study: Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking
    • Any postgrad elective from related programs i.e. Law, Business, Arts

    Professional Practice Mode

    Students complete these six (6) required courses (250 credits):

    • BUSN5006 Ethical Production of Goods and Services
    • LAWS5000 Law and Modern Slavery
    • PHIL6020 Ethical Issues in Professional Life
    • BUSN6015 Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability
    • ARTS6XXX Research Industry Placement (50 units of credit)
    • ARTS6XXX Applied Professional Project (100 units of credit)

    Students complete two (2) of the following courses (50/75 credits):

    • ARTS5000 Modern Slavery and Global Politics
    • ARTS5XXX Policing Human Trafficking
    • BUSN5750 Organisations: Power, Leadership and Transformation

    Students complete any of the following to make 400 units of credit (50/100 credits):

  • Mode of study and assessment

    The required courses of the Master of Arts (Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking) are delivered online to reach as many students as possible. There may be synchronous sessions that allow you to engage with the lecturer and other students, plus pre-recorded videos and readings and other learning materials. Our experienced academics will guide you on your learning journey and engage expert guest speakers and presenters where appropriate.

    When completing your Practicum and Project courses, you may need to be in a workplace or an organisation to complete the learning outcomes. These venues/locations can be determined with your course coordinator to suit your location and situation.

    Some of the elective courses are available online and other elective courses are offered in a blended mode which means some learning opportunities are delivered online and others are face to face. There may also be the opportunity for some elective courses to be offered entirely face to face. You can select the elective courses with the delivery mode that suits your study needs and circumstances.

    Courses may be organised over a 13 week period or a shorter, more compact time frame. Fulltime or part time study is possible.

    Assessments for each course will encourage you to deepen your learning by fully engaging with materials and conducting your own in-depth investigations and research.

    To be eligible for admission to The University of Notre Dame Australia, all applicants must meet the University’s minimum requirements for admission. The requirements for admission are detailed in the University’s Policy: Admissions

    Specific Program Requirements for Admission

    To be eligible for admission to the Master of Arts (Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking)applicants must also meet the following specific requirements:

    • Students must have as a minimum qualification, a recognised Bachelor degree (AQF level 7 qualification) or equivalent in any discipline area.
    • Applicants without a Bachelor level qualification may be eligible to enter the Program if they have at least two years’ experience in a related field. This would be determined on a case-by-case basis.
    • Possession of a Graduate Certificate or Diploma (AQF level 8 qualification) of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking or a cognate discipline.
  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Master of Arts (Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking), graduates will be able to:

    1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of modern slavery and human trafficking in local, national, and international contexts
    2. Critically analyse and evaluate issues related to modern slavery and human trafficking
    3. Synthesise complex information and evaluate proposed actions, solutions, and strategies to eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking
    4. Demonstrate well-developed and highly adaptive communication skills to inform audiences about the complex issues surrounding modern slavery and human trafficking
    5. Apply knowledge, initiative, and creativity to plan and execute a substantial research-based projector professional project in the area of modern slavery and human trafficking; and
    6. Work as a reflective and independent researcher and/or professional practitioner and, where appropriate, in collaboration with others.

    A domestic fee-paying place is a place at university where the student is responsible for the full cost the program.

    Eligible domestic fee-paying students may apply for the FEE-HELP loan scheme which assists eligible fee-paying students with the payment of all, or part, of their tuition fees, not including additional study costs such as accommodation or textbooks. Your FEE-HELP debt will be indexed each year in line with the Consumer Price Index.
