The Master of Laws (coursework) is a Master of Laws degree with a focus on emerging commercial and legal realities in an international context. The degree will enable students to develop in-depth legal knowledge and skills in the areas of international law that they choose. The course aims to develop advanced independent research and writing skills, critical analysis, complex problem-solving and advanced reasoning skills in the law.     A Master of Laws (LLM) is a great way to expand your legal knowledge and skills and differentiate yourself from other law graduates and lawyers. This program focuses on international law. With the globalisation of the legal profession, it is helpful to develop a strong understanding of international law and the practice of law in other jurisdictions.

    The electives on offer may include Asia-Europe Trade Law, International Business Law and Dispute Resolution, International Cultural Heritage Law, International Business Law in Practice, International Taxation Law, International Transport Law, Issues in International Law and Contemporary Culture, International Environmental Law, The Legal Environment of the Asia- Pacific Region, The Philosophy of International Law, International Human Rights Law, International Perspectives on Bioethics and the Law, Law & Religion, and Canon Law.

  • Entry requirements

    This LLM is available only to students with prior studies in law.

    Admissions requirements:

    • Completed Bachelor of Laws (Hons); or
    • Bachelor of Laws with Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice; or
    • Bachelor of Laws degree completed at a high credit level; or
    • Bachelor of Laws degree combined with relevant practical experience; or
    • Juris Doctor; or
    • International equivalents

  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Master of Laws (Coursework), graduates will be able to:

    1. synthesise knowledge into written professional documents adapted to suit the purpose and audience
    2. apply knowledge of complex legal concepts, principles, theories, documents and academic writing in one or more disciplines or areas of practice, and transfer that knowledge to diverse national, regional and international legal contexts
    3. undertake self-directed learning demonstrating autonomy, expert judgement and adaptability by engaging in continuing professional development
    4. use ethical and socially responsible decision-making skills and evaluate the impact of global ethical and social issues on legal decision making outcomes
    5. conduct independent legal research and employ expert legal research methods and sources to locate, evaluate, synthesise and present accurate, up-to-date and reliable expert legal advice; and
    6. work responsibly in teams to analyse competing resource claims and recommend agreed shared outcomes.

    Domestic Fee-Paying
    A domestic fee-paying place is a place at university where the student is responsible for the full cost the program.

    Eligible domestic fee-paying students may apply for the FEE-HELP loan scheme which assists eligible fee-paying students with the payment of all, or part, of their tuition fees, not including additional study costs such as accommodation or textbooks. Your FEE-HELP debt will be indexed each year in line with the Consumer Price Index.


    International Full-Fee Paying
    Tuition costs depend on an international student’s study load and discipline. Fees are payable each semester at least four weeks prior to the commencement of your program.
