Cannulation

Are you a Health Professional looking to refresh and develop your skills?

Description

This course is aims to provide participants with a theoretical understanding of cannulation including indications, contraindications, cannula sizing, vein anatomy and selection, aseptic technique, and the procedure. This theoretical understanding is consolidated with demonstration and supervised practice of the procedure on a part task trainer (manikin). The course includes the use of both safety and non-safety cannulas using both sterile and non-sterile glove techniques to suit healthcare professionals from any setting and resourcing.

This course does not determine competency or utilise human participants for insertions. The course is designed as a precursor to facility based, supervised insertions where competence is determined at a local level asper local policy. The course centers around the national Australian Commission for Safety and Quality on Health Care (ACSQHC) Management of Peripheral Intravenous Catheters Clinical Care Standard (2021).

The course consists of one hour online pre-course activities and four hours of face-to-face practice time. Pre-course activity access and course location details will be emailed to participants approximately two weeks in advance. Pre-course activity access will be deactivated the day following the course.

This course is suitable for any healthcare professionals who are required to gain intravenous access within their working role (nurses, midwives, doctors, paramedics, worksite medics, healthcare students)
