This course is designed to provide those new to the triage role and those wanting to refresh, with an understanding of the guidelines and recommendations for the triage of patients in the emergency department. The course will involve discussion of key concepts and factors involved in triage and utilises problem based learning to develop skills in the application of the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS) to over 200 scenarios (155 self-directed).

  • Course objectives

    • Discuss the current triage guidelines and recommendations from relevant professional bodies concerning emergency department triage
    • Define and describe the role of the triage nurse, discussing requirements and barriers of the role including communication
    • Discuss the Australasian Triage Scoring system categories and scoring allocation
    • Discuss minimum triage assessment and documentation standards and workshop examples
    • Discuss red flags for common presenting complaints and considerations for special populations (paediatric, obstetrics, trauma, sepsis, mental health)
    • Workshop examples of common patient presentations, assessment strategies and triage allocation considerations
    • Discuss the delegation and supervision requirements of the triage nurse to the waiting room nurse to ensure patients are re-evaluated and re-prioritized appropriately
  • Course learning outcomes

    At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

    • Clearly define the role and responsibilities of the triage nurse/officer
    • Differentiate the ATS categories and their criteria
    • Apply the ATS to a wide range of patient scenarios including high risk and special populations (trauma, paediatrics, obstetrics, sepsis, mental health) and justify ATS allocation
    • Discuss strategies and barriers to maintaining safety of patients in the waiting room
    • Understand the current triage guidelines, recommendations and position statements guiding practice in the triage role
  • About the facilitator

    Sallyanne Tingey
    Senior Lecturer

    Registered Nurse, BSc (Nursing), GCert Clinical Nursing, GCert Higher Education Learning and teaching, GCert Health Professional Education

    Sallyanne is a Registered Nurse with over 10 years of post-graduate experience in the emergency nursing specialisation. Sallyanne has worked in a variety of metropolitan and regional emergency departments across Western Australia in both clinical and education roles. Areas of expertise are emergency department triage, ventilation, advanced life support and Sallyanne is currently an Australian Resuscitation Council Advanced Life Support Level 1 and 2 instructor and course director.

    Sallyanne has completed multiple Graduate Certificates in nursing and education and is currently undertaking the Master of Health Professional Education at the University of Notre Dame Australia. Sallyanne is currently course coordinating and program developing for post graduate education at the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Sallyanne also delivers undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing education in critical care, pathophysiology, pharmacology and public health courses.

  • Refunds and cancellations

    Triage Short Course Refund Policy

    A full refund is available if notice of cancellation is received 42 days (6 weeks) prior to course commencement.

    Transfer to another course date without loss of payment only if outside minimum cancellation period.

    The University of Notre Dame Australia reserves the right to cancel a course date if minimum numbers are not achieved, with full refund or transfer to another course date.
