Graduate Certificate in Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

Although many companies profess to focus on modern slavery in their operations and supply chains, there is a considerable gap between theory and practice. The Graduate Certificate in Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking at the University of Notre Dame Australia holistically explores severe forms of labour exploitation. It equips students with the skills to proactively identify, prevent and remedy modern slavery and human trafficking. The Graduate Certificate is a foundation program that leads to the Graduate Diploma.

  • About this program

    Estimates put the number of people affected by modern slavery at about 40.3 million. Most of these people are in developing countries, but there are also people in developed countries, including Australia.

    Since the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act in the United Kingdom and Australia, organisations are increasingly aware of the risk of modern slavery and human trafficking in their operations and supply chains.

    The courses in the Graduate Certificate cover practical topics relating to business practices and legal compliance, law enforcement and ethical and moral leadership. You’ll enhance your ability to analyse, interpret, draw conclusions, problem-solve and communicate. These are the skills of the 21st century workplace.

  • Program summary

    The Graduate Certificate has two required courses BUSN5006 Ethical Production of Goods and Services and LAWS5000 Law and Modern Slavery. You can then select two courses depending on your professional or personal interests.

    Students complete these two (2) required courses (50 credits):

    Students complete two (2) of the following courses (50 credits):

    • BUSN5007 Policing Human Trafficking
    • BUSN5008 Modern Slavery and Global Politics
    • BUSN5750 Organisations: Power, Leadership and Transformation

  • Mode of study and assessment

    The required courses of the Graduate Certificate are delivered online to reach as many students as possible. There may be synchronous sessions that allow you to engage with the lecturer and other students, plus pre-recorded videos and readings and other learning materials. Our experienced academics will guide you on your learning journey and engage expert guest speakers and presenters where appropriate.

    Some of the elective courses are also available online and other elective courses are offered in a blended mode which means some learning opportunities are delivered online and others are face to face. You can select the study mode that suits you best when selecting your two elective courses.

    Courses may be organised over a 13 week period or a shorter, more compact time frame. You can study the Graduate Certificate on a fulltime or part time basis.

    Assessments for each course will encourage you to deepen your learning by fully engaging with materials and conducting your own investigations

    To be eligible for admission to The University of Notre Dame Australia, all applicants must meet the University’s minimum requirements for admission. The requirements for admission are detailed in the University’s Policy: Admissions

    Specific Program Requirements for Admission

    To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking applicants must also meet the following specific requirements:

    Students must have as a minimum qualification, a recognised Bachelor degree (AQF level 7 qualification) or equivalent in any discipline area.

    Applicants without a Bachelor level qualification may be eligible to enter the Program if they have at least two years’ experience in a related field. This would be determined on a case-by-case basis.

  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking, graduates will be able to:

    1. Demonstrate specialised knowledge of modern slavery and human trafficking in local, national,and international contexts
    2. Identify economic, social, and political factors that allow modern slavery and human trafficking tooperate
    3. Evaluate the effectiveness of nation state diplomacy and domestic and international laws to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking
    4. Evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives by non-government organisations and agencies to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking; and
    5. Reflect on how personal decisions and actions can progress change to ensure the dignity and human rights of people.

    Domestic Fee-Paying
    A domestic fee-paying place is a place at university where the student is responsible for the full cost the program.

    Eligible domestic fee-paying students may apply for the FEE-HELP loan scheme which assists eligible fee-paying students with the payment of all, or part, of their tuition fees, not including additional study costs such as accommodation or textbooks. Your FEE-HELP debt will be indexed each year in line with the Consumer Price Index.
