  • IES has been involved in team-teaching and in curriculum planning, providing consultancy with regard to developing the ethical components of the following units: NPD 1000 Communication for Nurses; NPD 2000 Ethics and Law in Nursing; NPD3000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Health.

An inaugural event held April 8, 2015 (see our News & Events page for details and program).

Visiting international expert on Ethics Education, Dr. Mary Gentile, founder of the “Giving Voice to Values” curriculum (2011 and 2012): Talks and workshops, funded by a grant from the Mary Philippa Brazil foundation (Press release). In particular, Dr. Gentile worked closely with the medical and nursing faculties at UNDA to assist in developing innovative methodologies for teaching and promoting ethical practice.

Ethics Education at Notre Dame

IES co-coordinated, with the School of Philosophy and Theology, two offerings of the postgrad unit ‘Ethical Issues in Professional Life’

Delivered expert guest lectures on ethics in the Schools of Nursing, Medicine, Business, Arts & Sciences (Media)

Developed and assisted delivering of new Bioethics stream in the School of Medicine, Sydney in collaboration with the School of Philosophy and Theology.

Ethics Education and Consultancy: External

Developed and delivered a professional ethics training course for the Office of the EPA in WA. The course developed from the interaction of our focus on virtue ethics and our previous collaboration with Prof Gentile (Darden School of Business, University of Virginia) and her program, Giving Voice to Values.

Engagement: Facilitating conversations in the public square

At the end of 2016 we held a very well-attended QNDA panel event on “Euthanasia and Palliative Care”. Panellists included: Most Reverend Bishop Richard Umbers, Associate Professor Natasha Michael, Jean Kittson, Professor Margaret Somerville, Professor Paul Komesaroff, and Associate Professor Justin Oakley.

The IES also assisted the Archdiocese of Sydney and Archbishop Anthony Fisher to deliver a new series of “Scholarship in the Cathedral” at St Mary’s Cathedral, which gives young Catholics an opportunity to engage in thoughtful debate on issues such as the interaction between science and religion.

Commentary on Issues in Public Life

IES staff have written recently, for example, on conscientious objection, euthanasia, palliative care, donor anonymity, the training of catholic bioethicists, same-sex marriage, how to disagree well in civic life and more.
