  • Biography

    Lynley comes from Noongar country in southwest WA and has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of WA in Perth and a PhD from The Australian National University in Canberra. She joined Nulungu Research Institute in March 2016 with longstanding interests in Aboriginal cultural heritage and a commitment to undertaking collaborative research partnerships with communities. She has previously worked at James Cook University, for the ACT Government and for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. She was also employed as a Senior Lecturer in archaeology at Flinders University (Adelaide) from 2005–2009, before moving to Brisbane to take up a Senior Research Fellow position in the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre at the University of Queensland for several years. After than until March 2016 she ran her own heritage consulting business and worked as an independent researcher.

  • Teaching areas

    At present Lynley has limited teaching responsibilities at UNDA, although she has extensive past experience in undergraduate and graduate teaching in archaeology and cultural heritage management. She is a recipient of an Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation "For leadership and innovation in developing an outstanding graduate training program in archaeology and cultural heritage management to produce industry ready graduates". She also regularly assists with training of Aboriginal community members in cultural heritage management as part of professional development opportunities.

  • Community engagement

    Lynley is a life member of AAA, having served as its President from 2009–2011. She is also the current Vice-President of AACAI, having served as the National President from 2013–2015. For nearly four years she was the Co-Editor (with Assoc. Prof. Heather Burke) of the national journal 'Australian Archaeology'.

    Lynley works closely with many Aboriginal communities around Australia, working on archaeology and cultural heritage related projects, often on a pro-bono basis. Some of these communities in recent years have included Ngarrindjeri, Banjima, Mitakoodi, Mirarr and Wanamara. Now that she is based in Broome, Lynley has also commenced working on local, Kimberley based projects, particularly with KALACC, Wiligun Aboriginal Corporation and Yawuru.
