Password and account management

In the digital age, creating strong and unique passwords or passphrases is essential for protecting your account and digital security. Weak or reused passwords pose significant risks, potentially leading to data breaches, identity theft, and financial loss.

To assist in creating strong and unique passwords or passphrases, you will need to meet the following requirements.

  • Must contain:
    • A minimum of 12 characters
  • Should not contain:
    • Re-use previous passwords
    • Contain personal details, e.g., names, important dates, addresses, phone numbers or family information
    • Repetitive/sequential letters and numbers, e.g., '123', 'ABC', '000'
    • Easily identifiable words, e.g. 'Australia', 'Notre Dame', or 'Peoplesoft'

If you are wondering whether to use a password or a passphrase, Notre Dame recommends using a passphrase. Visit Okta's password vs passphrase for more information.

  • Unlock your account

    After 4 unsuccessful login attempts, your account will be locked. If you do not have access to your Notre Dame email, you will need to have Self-Service reset enabled.

    1. If your Notre Dame account has been locked, visit account login
    2. Select 'Unlock account?'
    3. Enter your Notre Dame email and select your preferred method of reset
      Please allow several minutes to receive the notification. The timing may vary depending on your device, location, and connection.
    4. Follow the steps of the preferred reset method (code or email)
    5. Your account will be unlocked once you have successfully authenticated
  • Reset Forgotten Password

    1. Go to account login using any device, enter your email address, and click Next
    2. Select 'Forgot Password'
    3. Select your preferred method of reset
      Please allow several minutes to receive the notification. The timing may vary depending on your device, location, and connection.
    4. Follow the steps of the preferred reset method (code or email)
    5. Once successfully authenticated, you can create your new password following the password policy
      Optional: Select the box to sign out of all other devices that access your Notre Dame account and applications, such as MS Teams and Office 365
    6. Once your password has been reset, you will be returned to the login screen
  • Change Your Current Password

    If you know your existing password. You can change it by following the below steps:

    1. Login to the account settings page using your email address and password
    2. Under 'Change Password', enter your current and new passwords.
      Optional: Select the box to sign out of all other devices that access your Notre Dame account and applications, such as MS Teams and Office 365
    3. Select 'Change Password'
    4. You may be required to re-authenticate using Okta Verify on your phone. Once you have successfully authenticated, you will be returned to the login screen
  • Register Your Mobile Number

    To enable self-service password reset, you need to register your mobile number.

    1. Login to the account settings page using your email address and password
    2. Under 'Security Methods', select 'Set up' next to Phone
    3. Select 'Australia' from the drop-down menu and enter your mobile number, excluding the '0' from the beginning of your number
    4. Select 'Receive a code via SMS'
    5. Enter the 6-digit code received in the SMS and select 'Verify'
    6. Once you have successfully authenticated, a pop-up will confirm you have successfully enrolled your phone number
      You will also receive an email with the subject 'Authenticator Registered'. Please allow several minutes to receive the email. The timing may vary depending on your device, location, and connection.
