Stay secure abroad

Keep yourself secure when accessing university systems at home or abroad. Keep these tips in mind to stay secure every time you connect.

Top Tips

  • Remove pre-saved passwords and forms from your web browser
  • Minimise what personal details may be available on your device (credit card details, passport information)
  • Avoid using portal devices to store or transfer your files. USBs can be easily lost or stolen
  • Keep an eye on your emails, remember “Don’t fall for the Bait”. Phishing emails can attempt to access your data through malicious software using links in an email
  • Avoid sharing your device with friends and colleagues or using shared devices in public areas
  • Create a secure connection by connecting to a VPN before searching the web
  • Change your password after returning from overseas
  • Keep an eye on your accounts and report any suspicious behaviour

Keep yourself up to date

Update your devices regularly to ensure you have the latest security updates. Try to avoid updating your device while travelling. Complete the updates before you leave and again once you return. If you are unsure of an update, it is good to check the app's website. Decide if the current update is needed for your app; a security patch could be necessary, a new feature not so much.

If you are unsure, bring your device to IT, and we can let you know if you require updates to be installed.

Keep things Private

Try to keep personal and sensitive information to yourself.

  • Practice locking your device when you are not using it.
  • Use a strong password or PIN on all devices
  • Let friends and family know of your planned travels over the phone or in person.
  • Avoid using social media to share information about your trip
  • Set up verifications for accounts to go to your phone
  • Limit performing sensitive transactions, e.g. banking, online shopping and anything work-related in public areas and hotspots

Use a VPN

If you’re a frequent traveller or work from home, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and network connection.

Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when using public Wi-Fi (at home or abroad). It is important to note that although complimentary hotel and airport lounge Wi-Fi are not secure.

After returning from travel abroad, monitor your account for unusual activity and run a virus or malware scan on your device. If you suspect your account is compromised, please contact your IT service desk.

Personal and Portable Device Security

Sometimes you need to bring a portable device with you; Try these helpful hints to keep your data safe while on the go.

  • Decide what devices you need vs those you can live without for your trip
  • Disable auto-connect to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and minimise location sharing
  • Install a device finder or enable the Find My Device feature for Android, iOS or Windows
  • Set encryption on your devices
  • Try to keep the device on you; don’t leave it out in hotel rooms if you can help it
  • Back up your devices before you go and again when you come back
  • Run a virus and malware scan when you have returned
