1.3.2 Show respect
There are certain expectations from students regarding academic integrity and ethical scholarship.
Ethical scholarship means producing work which is honest, reliable and credible. This includes presenting your work and acknowledging when other sources were used. Those expectations are based on respect for intellectual property, which means the authorship rights in copyright, and the rights of creation in patents. Respecting your and other people's intellectual property is very important in the outside community, where similar codes of conduct may apply.
On a practical level it means that as a student at The University of Notre Dame Australia you have both rights and responsibilities in relation to intellectual property. On the one hand, there is the academic and moral responsibility to respect the intellectual property of others, but also, while you are a student at Notre Dame you are creating intellectual property of your own. These include assignments, research projects and outputs, other academic projects or inventions.
Within the University there are rules on how you may use intellectual property in your studies and all academic work. In the outside world it is important to understand there are legal consequences for breach of intellectual property as well.
