1.3.6 Creative commons

A Creative Commons licence is a slightly different form of copyright. It means that creators have allowed a greater range of use for their material for non-commercial purposes than might normally apply.

When you look at something that has a Creative Commons licence, you might notice some extra symbols. These symbols define the terms of use and restrictions that apply. It is important to know what these symbols mean for copyright.

  • Creative Commons

This symbol means 'Creative Commons' (CC). Each CC licence "allow[s] the material to be copied, distributed and reused, at a minimum in its current form, for non-commercial purposes, and as long as the original creator/s are credited." (Creative Commons Australia: About the Licences).

  • Attribution

This symbol means "Attribution". It applies to all CC licences, and means that others must credit and link to the creators of a work and any others they nominate.

  • No derivative works

This symbol means "No Derivative Works". It means that others can only copy, distribute and perform the work in its original form, and cannot alter or change it in any way.

  • Non-commerical

This symbol means "Non-commercial" and restricts use to non-commercial purposes.

  • Share Alike

This symbol means "Share Alike". Remixing, adapting and building on share alike works is permitted providing the same license is used.
