  • Biography

    Shyam is a deep-thinking and accomplished mathematics education specialist with over 20 years experience. He has broad experience teaching at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Before his appointment at UNDA in 2023, he was working as a mathematics teaching consultant for seven years, translating research into practice for classroom teachers to boost student engagement and performance. Two of his greatest achievements during this time were the Alcoa Maths Enrichment Program (AMEP) and the subsequently developed Lighthouse Maths program. AMEP was named as an example of "best practice in mathematics teaching and learning" in the 2019 state STEM strategy, and won the DMIRS award for Community Partnerships in 2020. Both programs have been demonstrated to increase student performance in mathematics by up to 6 months additional learning within a year of implementation.

    Shyam is currently completing his PhD with UNDA examining how primary teachers overcome their mathematics teaching anxiety.

  • Teaching areas

    Shyam's teaching focus is primary mathematics education.

    Shyam is currently the coordinator of three primary mathematics teaching courses:

    • EDUC1635: Introduction to mathematics teaching
    • EDUC 2652: Number and Algebra; and
    • EDUC 3662: Measurement and Geometry

    and teaches across all three of these course, as well as:

    • EDUC 4639: Statistics and Probability
    • EDUC 2315: Mathematics Learning for Early Adolescents; and
    • EDUC 4321: Introduction to Research and Scholarship
