  • Inherent requirements

In addition to meeting academic requirements for admission into the Bachelor of Nursing, students must also demonstrate a range of inherent requirements necessary for ensuring the provision of safe, ethical nursing care. Refer to relevant Inherent Requirements/Fitness for Practice for further information.

  • Professional practice

Students at the University of Notre Dame, Australia (UNDA) undertake extensive professional practice in a variety of clinical settings throughout the 3 year nursing program. This equates to between a 4 to 6 week placement twice a year.  Placements are full time and shifts worked cover the am, pm and nightshift across the seven day week.

This provides students with a ‘reality of practice’ to work as a registered nurse in the health care team. Students are supported throughout their placement by the nursing staff in the work area and the university clinical supervisor.

  • Midwifery professional practice

This midwifery program and curriculum aims to enable midwives to practice as safe, competent practitioners as specified in the Midwife Standards for Practice (2018).

Midwifery is a practice-based profession and professional practice experience placements will provide the opportunity for students to acquire the midwifery knowledge and skills to meet the requirements necessary for registration. The professional practice experience component is designed so that the theory topics are integrated with practice criteria to enable students to directly apply theory to practice. Professional practice skills laboratory sessions provide initial learning opportunities.

The professional practice experience component of the course consists of a wide range of field placements including public and private hospitals, and community and rural settings. Students therefore experience a variety of placements to ensure that they gain comprehensive knowledge of the areas where midwifery is practiced. Midwifery students at the University of Notre Dame, Australia (UNDA) undertake extensive professional practice which equates to 27 weeks of placement across the 18-month program and shifts worked cover the am, pm and nightshift across the seven day week. Students are supported throughout their placement by the midwifery staff in the work area and the university clinical supervisor.

Any enquires regarding midwifery professional practice should be directed to midwifery.professionalpractice@nd.edu.au
