  • Biography

Professor Monica Robotin graduated with Honours from the School of Medicine, University of New South Wales and obtained specialist qualifications in cardio-thoracic surgery in Australia, followed by Fellowships in congenital heart surgery in France and the United States. As the first female surgeon to be awarded the Graham Traveling Fellowship by the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, she worked at Washington University and St Louis Children’s Hospital, where she researched the mechanism of re-entry arrhythmias following paediatric cardiac surgery and developed a growing vascular graft.

Following a career change she obtained a Master Degree in Business Administration, with sub-majors in Communication and Health Management. For her Master of Applied Epidemiology degree she conducted the first analysis of surveillance data on newly acquired hepatitis B and C infections in Australia and examined the clinical characteristics of AIDS-related non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapies. Her Master of International Health examined barriers to HIV voluntary counselling and testing in Mpumalanga Province (South Africa). Her PhD examined the feasibility of a population-level response to chronic hepatitis B infection in Australia.

As Research Director of Project Support Group Southern Africa she worked in HIV – AIDS impact mitigation in South Africa. As Medical Director of Cancer Council NSW, she led a community-based program of hepatitis B education, testing and management in high risk migrant communities (B Positive). She is continuing this work through collaborations within the Sydney Health Partners consortium. As an academic at the University of Sydney, she developed new courses for the Master of Public Health program and taught in the Postgraduate Medical Program. In 2013 she spent her sabbatical leave at the Maldives National University, developing the country’s first Master of Public Health curriculum and mentoring local academics.

She has over 80 peer-reviewed publications and co-edited two reference books and a monograph on the primary care diagnosis and management of hepatitis B infection in Australia.

In 2016 she was appointed as Professor and Head of New Course Development and Quality Management at The University of Notre Dame Australia, School of Medicine, Sydney.
