School of Medicine, Sydney Campus

The School of Medicine offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, Master of Bioethics, Masters of Paramedicine (Melbourne Clinical School, Werribee) and Graduate Certificates, Diploma’s and Master’s in Health Professional Education, Health Leadership and Health and Medical Sciences based at our Sydney campus.

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a 4-year graduate-entry program which combines basic and clinical sciences, communication and clinical skills, population and public health, and personal and professional development. The curriculum is delivered principally through Problem Based Learning in small groups led by a clinician for the Foundation Years (Years 1 and 2) and then through clinical placements at seven clinical schools in Sydney, Melbourne and rural NSW and Victoria in the Clinical Years (Years 3 and 4).

The School of Medicine is proud of its strong emphasis on supporting every student individually to enable them to become excellent, caring and ethical doctors. To further this goal, we have an innovative program in bioethics and a focus on rural medicine, palliative care and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Our founding values include respect for human life, for each person’s dignity, social justice and ethics.

The University of Notre Dame Australia (Darlinghurst campus) is based in one of the most exciting and prestigious medical and research precincts in Australia, and all students will undertake a supervised applied medical research project during their MD program.

  • Work Integrated Learning

The School of Medicine provides hands-on experience through a structured and supervised program of workshops and clinical site visits in the first two years of your Doctor of Medicine program. In the final two years of the degree you will apply and develop your clinical skills and knowledge in the care of patients. Clinical attachments in Years Three and Four take place in a variety of hospital and community settings. Students are able to engage with patients, their families and the health care professionals caring for them.

Paramedicine: Clinical placements are embedded in each semester of full time study, with students completing 600 hours across the two year full time program. Placements occur across several areas of paramedic practice including event management, patient transport, urgent care / primary care clinics, hospital departments, and emergency service ambulances

  • Mentoring/Academic Support

You will learn from practising academics who are experts in their fields, with support and mentoring every step of the way. Academic support is also available through Student Success which runs workshop sessions covering topics such as time management, essay writing, critical thinking, research and referencing, stress management, academic writing tips, language conventions, memory skills and exam preparation.

  • Facilities

The Darlinghurst campus houses a lecture theatre, a library, and rooms for workshops, clinical skills and problem based learning. Laboratory practical sessions are delivered offsite close to the Broadway University campus.  We also have clinical schools located at our different sites across NSW and Victoria.

Paramedicine: On campus students learn patient assessment and management using the latest paramedicine equipment, delivered by clinical paramedic academics and key industry groups. The Master of Paramedicine is in the final stages of accreditation with the Paramedicine Accreditation Council, with approval to deliver the program from 2025. Key features include online learning to support busy postgraduate students with a on campus (Melbourne Clinical School, Werribee) clinical skills week each semester prior to work integrated learning (available in Victoria and ACT)
