What was one of the most valuable things that you learnt during your time at Notre Dame?

Learning to digest and understand a huge quantity and range of information and then applying it to different scenarios/situations.

I use these skills every day, working with a range of companies to hire different job functions for their offices in Japan.

How would you describe your career journey?

Winding and treacherous! I’ve done a few different things and find my current job fits best with my skills and personality.

How did your degree at Notre Dame prepare you for a career outside your study?

It was a long time (15+ years ago!).

I remember that we had some interesting units and electives at Notre Dame that broadened my interest areas and gave me skills that I use daily, especially the presentation skills I gained in Moot despite being sweaty palmed and nervous!

I also think the smaller class and tutorial sizes prepared me well for working in small teams and with my clients and candidates.

The community service aspect of the degree was also a great chance to connect with my local community and something I look back at fondly.

Tell us the three best things about living/working in Japan?

There are so many! I spend most of my free time now with my kids, taking short trips on the weekend or visiting the parks around our house in Yokohama so my answers will probably have a dad vibe here…

  1. The diversity in places close to home (within an hour or so). We could be in the mountains or an Onsen spot or at a beautiful beach like Hayama or we could catch the train in to the West Side of Tokyo or another area we like.
  2. Food & culture, so many great places to eat with museums and galleries to visit! Some of my favourite music and art spots are BillBoard, The Room, BlueNote, Mori Art Museum, KaiKai Gallery, WISH-LESS and Zingaro (just because I used to live in Nakano!)
  3. Work wise, Japan is still a major world economy and is a huge market for B2B Enterprise Technology companies. I work with a great team, and we have the opportunity to work with some of the best companies in the market.

What motivates you?

Trying to get a little bit better every day, my kids and family, my team and food!
