Tim Corry

Registered Nurse at Broome Hospital
Bachelor of Nursing and Pre-Medicine Certificate

What did you study at Notre Dame and what are your gaols for the future?

I studied a Bachelor of Nursing and Pre-Medicine Certificate at the Fremantle Campus, and I’m hoping to return to Notre Dame next year to study a Doctor of Medicine to become a doctor and work in rural and remote parts of WA.

Do you have any favourite memories from Notre Dame?

There’s honestly so many, all shared with so many wonderful friends, but I really loved the days where we would all get Pasta Addiction for lunch (I would get the B+B Carbonara of course) and sit in the Esplanade Park between classes, or even just wandering around Freo exploring the streets, cafes, shops and beach.

What interested you in pursuing a career in nursing?

I wanted to work in a rural or remote area and wanted to work with and for people all the time, and I was also captivated by everything medical I would see so it made sense. There are so many career paths available that no two nursing careers ever follow the same tracks.

Where are you currently working and what does a typical workday look like?

I’m currently doing a 12-month Registered Nurse graduate program in the Kimberley Region, and after 6 months of working in Derby in Community Health, I’ve recently started at Broome Hospital on the General Medical/Surgical ward which has been a great learning experience. The thing I love about my working days is that no two are the same, but every shift starts by being allocated patients and receiving handover of care - then the real nursing starts, and you never know what might be coming your way.

What’s the best thing about being a nurse?

I love the camaraderie among nurses and health staff in general and how we all work together as a team with the patient towards better health and wellbeing. But my favourite part is seeing a patient as they walk out the hospital feeling better after seeing them come into hospital so sick, or when you see the impact you have made right in front of your eyes.

How do you manage stress at work?

Chocolate mainly. But exercise is critical (to both stress reduction and burning off the chocolate) - I love yoga and aerial silks. I’m also very lucky in Broome to be able to go for sunset strolls or dips at Cable Beach.

What advice would you have for someone who wants to study nursing?

Do it! It’s such a fantastic and varied career, you can never be bored and you’re always challenged. The best thing about nursing is that there are so many opportunities available and so many different paths you can take, and you always have the option to side-step into a different specialty/area completely.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

My gran, who passed away when I was 6. She was an amazing nurse, and there’s so much I want to talk to her about regarding nursing, and so many stories I want to share. I wear her old nurse’s fob watch to work every day.
