Graduate Certificate in Education (Middle Years Mathematics)

School of Education

The Graduate Certificate in Education (Middle Years Mathematics) provides a rigorous and specialised study for those wishing to develop specialised skills and qualifications for developing pedagogical content knowledge in mathematics particularly for students in Years 5-9.

  • Why study this program?

This unique Graduate Certificate in Education (Middle Years Mathematics) will equip you with the skills, knowledge and dispositions that will enable you to assume a role of leadership in mathematics education. You will develop deep mathematics pedagogical content knowledge, a strong understanding of the importance of research-based enquiry to inform teaching and skills in mentoring and coaching other teachers of mathematics.

The point of difference of this program from programs offered at other universities is that you will investigate both the mathematical content and the specialised pedagogical approach for teaching mathematics in the middle years. This strengthening of pedagogical and content knowledge is vital, as investment in teachers is a way in which the decline in student motivation and academic achievement in middle years mathematics can be halted.

This program would be ideal for teachers of primary mathematics who wish to specialise in mathematics, including numeracy coordinators, primary teachers who wish to teach in lower secondary classrooms and out-of-field secondary teachers of mathematics who wish to upskill to better understand the pedagogical content knowledge required to teach mathematics in the middle years.

Graduates of this program may choose to enrol for a Master of Education (Curriculum) at Notre Dame.
