    If you are an experienced teacher with practical experience and a desire to develop your career with a Special and Inclusive Education focus, this Master’s degree is the ideal course for you. The Master of Education (Special and Inclusive Education) is designed to meet the needs of professional teachers like you who wish to undertake further career development.

    Over the course of your studies, you will explore teaching and learning strategies to provide rich learning experiences for children with learning difficulties and giftedness in an inclusive classroom or as a teacher in a special education school.

    This degree consists of eight courses: two compulsory, one elective and five specialist courses. You will have the opportunity to explore topics such as Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Instruction Strategies for Learning Difficulties, Action Research in Education and Behaviour Management and Social Skills Instruction.

    Our flexible study options will ensure that you can accommodate your existing teaching load. Tuition will be available face-to-face and externally, either full-time or part-time. Face-to-face sessions are scheduled during school holidays or Saturdays.

  • Entry requirements

    To be eligible for admission to the Master of Education (Special and Inclusive Education) applicants must also meet the following specific requirements:

    • Be eligible for teacher registration in Australia; and either
    • Successfully complete the University of Notre Dame Australia Graduate Certificate of Education (Special and Inclusive Education) or equivalent; or
    • Have at least two years of full-time professional experience in either a primary or secondary school setting.
  • Learning outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Master of Education (Special and Inclusive Education) graduates will be able to:

    1. Critically apply and reflect on advanced knowledge and understandings of specialised educational theory and practices within the domain of special and inclusive education
    2. Demonstrate highly developed cognitive, technical and creative skills with initiative, high level of personal autonomy and accountability to generate understanding of complex issues in special and inclusive education within school contexts
    3. Evaluate and apply knowledge of research principles and methods of supporting students with special learning needs within special and inclusive school contexts
    4. Demonstrate highly developed communication and technical skills to implement, justify and interpret critical issues in special and inclusive education in a variety of contexts; and
    5. Plan, execute and reflect critically on a substantial research-based project and/or piece of scholarship on critical issues in special and inclusive education.
  • Career opportunities

    With a Master of Education (Special and Inclusive Education), your career options include teaching inclusive education in Australia as a Primary or Secondary School teacher in Catholic, Independent and Government schools, depending on your teaching qualification. Career opportunities within the education system include Lead teacher, faculty or year group coordinator, principal, and assistant principal.  Other career options outside the education arena include working with children and adolescents in the disabilities sector.

  • Real-world experience

    You will learn from our academics, who are leaders in their field. There are no practicum requirements for this program.

    Domestic Fee-Paying
    A domestic fee-paying place is a place at university where the student is responsible for the full cost the program.

    Eligible domestic fee-paying students may apply for the FEE-HELP loan scheme which assists eligible fee-paying students with the payment of all, or part, of their tuition fees, not including additional study costs such as accommodation or textbooks. Your FEE-HELP debt will be indexed each year in line with the Consumer Price Index.
