  • Biography

    Dr Elaine Rabbitt is a social historian with a PhD in Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies, Oral History, and lecturer in the Graduate Certificate of Aboriginal Studies. She brings many years of teaching and research experience to Nulungu.

    Since the mid-1970s she has lived and worked in Broome and maintains long lasting relationships with the local community. She was previously the Co-ordinator of ECU’s Kurongkurl Katitijin, Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research at the Broome campus, where she lectured and prepared First Nations students to become qualified teachers.

    Elaine values reciprocity to individuals and communities, as there is much to be learned and shared, especially for those who make a remote locality home.

    Researching, recording and documenting stories is a key focus for Elaine. She wrote the curriculum to gain national accreditation to teach AHCILM404 Record and Document Community History.

    She records the stories of people from all walks of life. Elaine has worked on oral history research projects with the National Library of Australia, Australian Institute of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), the National Film and Sound Archives (NFSA), national and international museums and universities.

    In 2021 Elaine won the Oral History Australia Media Award for her oral history interviews as part of the Anne St Reserve Oral History and Concert project: Stories of Strength, produced by Big MAMA Productions and performed in Broome and now show cased in Boola Bardip WA Museum.

    She is a lifelong member of the Broome Historical Society and Museum and has led the Society as President for more than a decade.
