Masters by Research
The Masters by Research degree is a postgraduate research degree comprising a substantial research component culminating in the submission of a thesis.
Masters by Research degrees are available in disciplines represented by the various Schools of the University on the Fremantle and Sydney campuses. For more information please contact the Research Office.
Master of Philosophy – Various Disciplines
The Master of Philosophy is a postgraduate research degree comprising both coursework (1/3 of degree; 0.5 year full-time study) and a substantial research component (2/3 of degree; 1 year full-time study) culminating in the submission of a thesis. The available courses offered within the program can be viewed at the research course descriptions page, with School-specific substitutions available in some instances.
Each candidate will be assigned supervisors who will provide support and academic guidance throughout the coursework and research components of the degree. The research supervisors will assist the candidate with the early preparation of their research proposal as part of the coursework unit - 'Developing a Research Proposal'. The research supervisors will continue to mentor and direct the candidate throughout the research phase until the thesis is examined.

Master of Medicine/Surgery
The Master of Medicine/Surgery is a postgraduate research degree aimed at clinical professionals with a medical degree and an interest in research.
This HDR degree provides research training through course work (1/3 of degree; online study opportunities offered) and a research component (2/3 of the degree), and is completed with a thesis or research dissertation. The estimated full-time course duration is 1.5 year, but part-time study is also available.
Each candidate will be assigned supervisors, including a University-based supervisor who will provide support and academic guidance throughout the coursework and research components of the degree.
