Cadmus

The University of Notre Dame has adopted Cadmus in response to student experience and feedback regarding learning and assessment, including concerns about the risks and impacts of the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence into everyday digital writing and text editing tools.

Getting started with Cadmus

Access Cadmus though your assessment link in Blackboard. Completing your work directly in the Cadmus Student Environment is mandatory. Transcribing from external sources, including textbooks, documents and websites is not permitted and pasting from an external writing source must be limited.

Cadmus integrates with Turnitin which enables a similarity score and report to be provided..

Supported Devices and Browsers

For the best experience, use Cadmus on a laptop or desktop with Chrome. You can also use tablets and iPads in landscape mode, although there are exceptions relating to assessments that also require the use of LockDown Browser.

Protecting Your Work

Cadmus autosaves every few seconds when online, with the saved status visible in the top-right corner of the Cadmus Student Environment. To ensure seamless autosaving:

  1. One device at a time: Work on your assessment using only one device. You can switch between devices but should not have the same Cadmus assessment open on multiple devices at one time.
  2. One browser tab at a time: Avoid opening your Cadmus assessment in multiple tabs or windows on the same device. Utilise the Notes tab in Cadmus for keeping draft content.
  3. Avoid refreshing: If you lose internet connection, do not refresh or close your browser. Your work will be saved locally, and Cadmus will attempt to reconnect in the background, saving your work when internet connection is restored.

LockDown Browser (LDB)

Some assessments may require the use of LockDown Browser (LDB). Make sure to prepare early:

  • Compatibility: Check that your device and operating system are compatible with LDB.
  • Install LDB early: Download and install LDB before your scheduled assessment.
  • Complete a practice test: Check whether there is a Cadmus Practice Test in your Blackboard course and complete the test to confirm that LDB is functioning correctly.

Troubleshooting LDB Issues

An incompatible device or operating system is the most common cause of LDB installation issues. Other causes can include:

  • Browser extensions: Uninstall any Chrome extensions before installing and launching LDB.
  • Remote desktop programs: Disconnect Chrome Remote Desktop while installing and using LDB.
  • Single app mode on iPads: If unavailable, uninstall and reinstall LDB from the App Store.
  • TeamViewer: If you use TeamViewer on your device, you need to disable automatic startup to launch LDB successfully.
