An even better University experience

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) supports the provision of a wide range of non-academic services and amenities for all students and student-focused initiatives.

The SSAF helps us to help support our students, by investing more in new opportunities and services that improve the experience of all Notre Dame students.

The SSAF will fund non-academic services across all campuses, based on feedback from our students on the services they value the most - from student advocacy and advice to student wellbeing, or student clubs and societies.

  • SSAF Governance Committee

The SSAF Governance Committee comprises over 50% student membership, the majority of whom are democratically elected. The SSAF Governance Committee determines the most effective, efficient, and impactful use of the monies collected by the SSAF. Key to informing the work of the SSAF Governance Committee are the outcomes of student consultation, primarily student surveys.

  • SSAF Student Surveys

SSAF Student Surveys occur annually and run for a minimum of two weeks. The survey results determine the services and amenities that matter most to our student community and establishes the priorities for SSAF expenditure.

In the October 2024 SSAF Student Survey, the Top 5 Priorities as determined by students were:

    • Providing libraries and reading rooms (in addition to those for academic purposes).
    • Providing food and drink services on campus.
    • Helping students obtain employment or career advice.
    • Assisting students with their financial affairs.
    • Helping students develop skills for study.

In 2025 the amount of SSAF revenue anticipated is $2.92 million.

SSAF FAQs

  • What is the SSAF?

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) is used by all Australian universities to support the investment in non-academic services and amenities for students – from student advocacy and advice to clubs and societies, and student wellbeing.

  • Why is Notre Dame charging students this fee?

We’re always looking for new ways to support our students and create a better University experience. We have also heard your feedback on what improvements to the student experience you would like us to consider.

The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) allows the University to invest more in that experience. The SSAF will be spent on non-academic services and we will continue to seek input from students about the services they value most.

  • Who decides what the money will be spent on?

We have a combined student and University SSAF Governance Committee to guide and inform how the funds will be spent.

We will regularly seek feedback from students, via the Student SSAF Survey, on the services and amenities that matter most to our community. We also welcome feedback through elected student representatives or sent directly to ssaf@nd.edu.au.

If you have an idea or initiative you wish to share with the committee, please submit a SSAF proposal for consideration.

  • How much will it cost me?

The fee charged will depend on the type of student – the calculator above will help you determine the fee that will apply to you. Importantly, the SSAF will allow us to grow and improve the experience of all our students across all our campuses.

  • How and when will I be charged?

The SSAF fee is charged each semester, as part of your University fees invoice. This invoice can viewed and download from Student Centre.

The Semester 1 2025 Census date is Friday 30 May 2025.

The 2025 Full Year session Census date is Friday 30 May 2025 (full year session students).

Semester 2 Census date is Friday 15 August 2025.

You can view all other Census dates on Calendars and Timetables.

Students who are eligible to defer payment via the SA-HELP loan scheme will receive a separate email to their personal email address from the Australian Government (ecafsystem@education.gov.au) with a link to complete the SA-HELP form.

If you intend to defer your SSAF to your HELP debt via SA-HELP, you only need to fill the form in once and all future SSAF payments will then be automatically deferred after Census date.

  • I’m using HECS-HELP. Can I also defer my SSAF?

Domestic students may also be eligible to defer their payment through the SA-HELP loan scheme, so there is no upfront cost. Learn more information on the SA-HELP loan scheme on the Study Assist SA-HELP site.

  • Do I have to pay the SSAF?

Yes, the SSAF will be charged to all students each semester to support investment in Notre Dame’s non-academic services and amenities. The funds raised by this fee will be in addition to the direct investment from the University, so we can deliver improvements and create an even better student experience.
