The Williams Papworth Research Fellowship

The Williams Papworth Research Fellowship is a postdoctoral research position in the Notre Dame Centre for the History of Philosophy, made possible by the generosity of Mrs Hilary Williams Papworth. Mrs Papworth endowed this four-year fellowship in 2025 in memory of Bill Papworth.

The Williams Papworth Research Fellowship is held by Aden Cotterill, who joins Notre Dame following doctoral studies at Clare Hall and the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge, where he was a World Universities Ramsay Postgraduate Scholar.

As the Williams Papworth Research Fellow, Aden is working on a project titled, Zeal: An Intellectual History. This project analyses the conceptual history of zeal in European philosophy and religion, with the aim of clarifying the contemporary meaning, value and risks of zeal today.
