English language proficiency requirements

The University of Notre Dame Australia requires applicants to achieve minimum academic and English language proficiency standards/requirements. This ensures that applicants are sufficiently prepared academically and competent in the English language, allowing them to participate effectively in their chosen program and achieve the expected program outcomes.

Applicants can demonstrate their English language proficiency by completing an English language test or through previous secondary or tertiary study as outlined below. The University reserves the right to request any applicant to sit an English Proficiency test or to undertake an Academic English Bridging program as a condition of their Offer.

Notre Dame offers an English language program for international students.

The following tests should be completed within two years prior to applying to the University.

Doctor of Medicine

For international applicants applying for the Doctor of Medicine (Sydney Campus only), Notre Dame accepts the following as meeting English proficiency entry requirements for the Doctor of Medicine:

English as primary language
  • All primary and secondary education was taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country*, or;
  • You have a combination of secondary and tertiary qualifications, where you have undertaken:
    • At least two years of your secondary education was taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country, and
    • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant professional discipline were taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country, or;
  • You have undertaken and satisfactorily completed at least six years’ FTE continuous education taught and assessed solely in English in any of the recognised countries, including tertiary qualifications in a relevant professional discipline.

*Recognised countries include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, or United States of America.

Successful completion of one of the following can be used to demonstrate English language competency:

  • At least one year full-time (or equivalent) undergraduate study at an Australian University;
  • An AQF level Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree at a recognised Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO);
  • At least one year full-time (or equivalent) at an undergraduate tertiary level degree in the United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland, where the language of instruction (teaching and examination) was English;

Successful completion of the following may also meet English competency requirements:

  • At least one year full-time (or equivalent) at a recognised university where the sole language of instruction and assessment was English and the qualification is assessed by Notre Dame to be equivalent to Australian degree studies; or
  • Secondary qualifications where the language of instruction (teaching and examination) was entirely in English, the qualification is deemed equivalent to Australian matriculation (Year 12) and the applicant achieved an equivalent pass grade in the final English examination.

The above studies should be completed within two years prior to application to The University of Notre Dame.
