Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training

Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training at Notre Dame

Our Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program is a national priority and is supported and funded by the Australian Government Department of Health. Our goal is to strengthen the recruitment and retention of health students and professionals in rural and remote Australia. Our program enables medical, nursing and allied health students to train in rural and remote communities via our national network located in NSW, VIC & WA.

How we Support Rural & Remote Communities?

There are fewer health professionals per head of population in rural and remote areas compared with the rest of Australia. This adversely affects the health and wellbeing of those living in rural and remote communities. There is evidence that health students who undertake extended training in a rural area, and students from a rural background, are more likely to take up rural practice upon graduation.

At Notre Dame we provide high-quality training, facilities, support services, accommodation, scholarships and pastoral care to our health students and professionals. These services are a proven and effective way to address gaps in the rural and remote health workforce.

Our RHMT National Network

Our program operates three training divisions:

  1. Rural Clinical School (RCS)

Our RCSs are located at Lithgow, Ballarat and Wagga Wagga and in partnership with the University of Western Australia and Curtin University we also have a RCS in WA. Our RCS medical students are immersed in all aspects of Hospital and Community Medicine. Students will explore the multifaceted dimensions of Rural Medicine with excellent and dedicated teachers who have made Rural Medicine their passion. Students at the School have plenty of opportunities to participate in patient care with hands-on management of patients under supervision.

  2. Riverina Regional Training Hub (RRTH)

The RRTH has a pivotal role in facilitating the advanced training of medical graduates by fostering opportunities for specialty training in the Riverina. The RRTH works with key stakeholders to support new doctors with a continuous and complete training pathway enabling them to live and work in the region over the long term. The RRTH team smooth and customise the often complex path for medical students and junior doctors that leads to Fellowship.

  3. Majarlin Kimberley Centre for Remote Health (Majarlin)

Majarlin is a University Department of Rural Health (UDRH), an academic centre based in rural and remote Australia focused on health education and research. We are based in the Kimberley region and have locations in Broome, Derby & Kununurra. As a UDRH, we perform a number of functions including:

    • Facilitating training placements and delivering end-to-end training in rural and remote locations
    • Providing learning and study facilities for students, such as clinical labs and training rooms.
    • Providing accommodation and social support for students undertaking a rural or remote placement.
    • In partnership with local Indigenous communities, facilitating cultural awareness and safety training for all students on placement.
    • Supporting the Indigenous health workforce, including Indigenous health academics and providing mentoring support to Indigenous health students.
    • Supporting the continuing professional development of rural and remote health professionals.
    • Undertaking rural and remote health research in close partnership with local communities, health professionals and services.
