• The Albert Coates Memorial Trust Scholarship

  Value: $2,500

  The purpose of this Scholarship is to promote regional health education and practice by providing financial support to students at the Ballarat Clinical School.

  To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must submit a 500-word statement about the importance of regional health and their understanding of the values and example of the late Sir Albert Coates.

• The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Medical Support Scholarship

  Value: $3,000 to $5,000

  The purpose of the Scholarship is to provide financial support, for living and educational expenses, to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) in the School of Medicine, Sydney, at The University of Notre Dame Australia.

  To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must:

  a. Be enrolled full-time in the School of Medicine, Sydney in the MD program;
  b. Be, and have recognition by their community as being, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person (confirmation of Aboriginality stamped with a common seal – not a statutory declaration); and
  c. Submit a complete application by the published due date (which includes a personal statement of 500 words or less addressing the Selection Criteria).

• The Dr Aniss Chami Scholarship

  Value: tuition fees 

  The purpose of the Scholarship is to offer a student from Lebanon the opportunity to commence studies as part of the International Medical Student Program with the School of Medicine at The University of Notre Dame, Sydney.

  To be eligible for the Scholarship, applicants must:

  1. be offered an international student place at the School of Medicine (Sydney) as a full fee paying international student in the Doctor of Medicine program;
  2. have completed a specific undergraduate degree in biosciences within the last 3 years at either Notre Dame University Louaize, the University of Balamand or the University of Saint Espirit Kaslik in Beirut, Lebanon;
  3. achieve a distinction level Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 or above;
  4. undertake the Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT) achieving a score of at least 60 or the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) exam with a score greater than 508;
  5. complete the Notre Dame Portfolio including the Personal Statement demonstrating mission alignment, personal qualities and a record of life achievement;
  6. demonstrate proficiency in the English language – IELTS at least 7 in all sections;
  7. be a Lebanese citizen or permanent resident applying for the International Medical Student program with the School of Medicine (Sydney) and;
  8. have successfully completed the International Student Application form contained in the University’s Admissions Guide, by the closing date for all applications for that year.
  9. satisfactorily meet student visa requirements as determined by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection of Australia.

• John Flynn Scholarships

  The Medical Student Vacation Scholarships, usually referred to as the John Flynn Scholarships were established in 1997. They are an integral part of the Australian Government’s long-term strategy to attract more rural doctors and improve the quality of healthcare in rural areas. Working closely with a rural doctor mentor and the placement community, medical students develop an overview of the challenges and rewards associated with rural medical practice and non-metropolitan healthcare services. Each year approximately 150 new scholarships are made available. An amount of $500.00 per week will be paid to cover food and living expenses while on placement. Costs of travel and accommodation will be organised and paid for by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), which is the national management agency for the program.

  Scholarship holders undertake a placement in the same rural or remote community for a minimum of 2 weeks per year, normally over 4 consecutive years. Students gain first-hand experience of living and medical practice in rural Australia. Students may undertake a placement in a supervised general practice, hospital, Aboriginal Medical Service or other medical facility that provides primary care.

  Each scholarship holder is matched with a rural and remote medical practitioner in the placement community. Mentors provide role models for scholarship holders, and introduce them to country medical practice, and supervise and support them during their stay. The local community is also a vital part of the John Flynn Scholarship. Community contacts facilitate social and cultural introductions in the local area to enable scholars to immerse themselves fully in the distinct culture of the community.

  By undertaking a placement in the same community for a minimum of 2 weeks per year over a 4-year period, students are involved in a practical way with the reality and diversity of rural Australia. Students are required to provide a written report and evaluation at the end of each placement.

  John Flynn Scholarships are open to Australian citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate medical course at an Australian Medical School. Students need to be able to complete scholarship requirements before they finish their medical degree. Applications close in April each year. Each year, one scholarship is available in Australia for an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander student and one scholarship is available in New Zealand for a Maori student.

• Rural Scholarships

  There are a range of scholarships designed to provide enrolled medical students with rural experience in order to encourage graduates to practice in rural/remote areas of Australia. The NSW Rural Doctors Network provides details of scholarships for this purpose on its website.

• Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS)

  The Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS) scheme is one of a number of Australian Government initiatives to increase the number of general practitioners in rural and remote Australia. The aim of the scheme is to increase the number of students with a rural background who enter and complete their study of medicine at a tertiary level. Scholarship holders receive $10 000.00 each year during the completion of a standard medical degree at their chosen university.

  RAMUS provides financial support to assist in meeting accommodation, living and travel costs incurred while studying medicine. The scholarships are not bonded. Instead, scholarship holders’ ties to regional and rural Australia are reinforced though a rural mentorship scheme, as well as membership of their student Rural Health Club.

  The National Rural Health Alliance administers the RAMUS scheme on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. Applications close in January each year.

  Up to two Rural Scholarships will be awarded this summer to School of Medicine, Sydney students with a value of $2000 each. The scholarships are for research projects focusing on health issues affecting regional, rural and remote Australia, as well as issues related to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
